Age No Barrier: Aamir Khan Addresses Genelia Deshmukh's Casting in 'Sitaare Zameen Par'!
NEWS RATING
Mumbai, India: Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, set to make his much-anticipated return to the big screen with Sitaare Zameen Par, has finally addressed the buzz surrounding the casting of Genelia Deshmukh as his co-star, despite their significant age difference. The 60-year-old actor, known for his thoughtful approach to filmmaking, has spoken out, citing modern technology and evolving industry perspectives as key factors.

The pairing of Aamir Khan (60) with Genelia Deshmukh (37), who is 23 years his junior, has naturally become a talking point, particularly since Aamir himself introduced Genelia to Bollywood in 2008's Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, where she starred opposite his nephew, Imran Khan. Now, 17 years later, they are set to play a married couple, prompting questions from fans and media alike.

Aamir Khan Breaks His Silence:

In a recent interview, Aamir Khan acknowledged the irony and the initial thought process behind the casting. "Ya, I know. That thought did come to me," he admitted with a chuckle. He humorously added, "But that was a long time ago. And ab Imran bhi kaafi meri age ka ho gaya hai (laughs)."

However, Khan quickly shifted focus to the practicality and modern advancements in filmmaking. He revealed that in Sitaare Zameen Par, both he and Genelia are portraying characters in their early 40s. He emphasized that the age gap is no longer a creative hurdle for actors, thanks to contemporary visual effects.

"Age is no longer a barrier for actors anymore," Khan stated confidently. "We have the advantage of VFX now. Earlier, if I had to play an 18-year-old, I had to rely on prosthetics — like Anil Kapoor did in Eeshwar (1989), when he played an 80-year-old. Today, you can look 80 or 40 or 20 on screen with seamless visual effects."

This explanation highlights how technological progress is enabling filmmakers to cast actors based on their suitability for the character's age within the narrative, rather than being strictly limited by their real-life age.

About "Sitaare Zameen Par":

Directed by R.S. Prasanna (known for Shubh Mangal Saavdhan), Sitaare Zameen Par is a Hindi adaptation of the critically acclaimed 2018 Spanish film Campeones. The plot revolves around a frustrated basketball coach (Aamir Khan's character) who is sentenced to community service, which involves training a team of neurodivergent adults. The film explores themes of self-discovery, human connection, and finding potential in unexpected places.

Genelia Deshmukh's role is crucial to the narrative, as she plays his wife and is expected to bring warmth and emotional depth to the story. The film also introduces ten new actors who are reportedly neurodivergent individuals, adding to its authentic portrayal.

Aamir Khan's return to acting after his hiatus post Laal Singh Chaddha has been highly anticipated. His candid explanation regarding Genelia's casting not only puts an end to speculation but also sheds light on the evolving landscape of age representation in Bollywood, thanks to technological advancements.

Sitaare Zameen Par is slated for a theatrical release on June 20, 2025.
